First I want to congratulate all the graduates of 2010, graduating is the first step in claiming independence whether it is at the high school level or college level it remains a proud accomplishment. Trust, your parent or guardian will be supportive of your accomplishment but it’s time to seek employment. At this time seeking a job can be scary due to a recession that has slowed America’s economy and slowed the hiring process but there is an alternative. What is the alternative you ask? Utilize this time to gain volunteer experience, internships if your a college student which will help in building your resume and provide work experience.

Seek a short term solution, don’t go far from the path, simple choose a career that encompasses a skill that is transferable. For example, if your college major was accounting then seek entry level jobs that use these skills. There is no shame in being a manager at a local fast food chain because the key is gaining work experience. Some of the fields that are surviving the recession are the food industry, retail services and defense contracting companies.

This will be the first of a three part series that will provide graduates advice on career choices. Also please feel free to support my charitable cause by donating a tie if interested please visit www.weellc.net or e-mail harrywash@weellc.net. Also write comments on the blog page www.weellc.net/blog.

The worst words an employer can say is downsizing, yes downsizing now has become the most terrible word in the English dictionary. It refers to a company’s method of reducing its workforce. If you ever receive a memo that states that your company is downsizing then it means trouble. Many companies practice this strategy so they can save jobs and money however in today’s climate it provides more people in the unemployment line.

The second term that most American’s in the work force should fear is outsourcing. Typically outsourcing is a great strategy because it allows economically stable organizations a chance to supply smaller companies with work. I am not complaining since owning a small business it would be great to receive a portion of the money being solicited for services. Currently a lot of companies are either downsizing or outsourcing it is important to understand the climate which you are seeking employment.

Most of us understand the impact and learn to maneuver through this economy. The impact of these situations may not be as terrible depending how you land! I saw an editorial on television last year that showed how some American’s have become entrepreneurs after losing their job. I learned a term from another writer which shall be shared in closing, are you recession proof? Remember if there are any questions or comments then direct them to harrywash@weellc.net or visit the blog site at www.weellc.net/blog. Also inquire about the teleworkshop that is being hosted on April 7, 2010 since it offers a lot of career information.
